CKHS Track & Field Coaching Staff
Mark Ward: Head Coach, Distance - Coach Ward started coaching at CKHS in 1992. He is a USATF Level II Coach in Sprints, Relays, Hurdles, and Jumps. He has also earned his Level I instructors certification, and is a National Level USATF Official. Coach Ward was fortunate enough to have been invited to the United States Olympic Training Center in 1995 and 1996 to take part in the USATF Junior Elite Sprint Camps as a coach. This past December, Coach Ward attended the USATF National Podium Education Project, learning training philosophy and technique from the nation's elite endurance and sprint coaches. Coach Ward has attended or spoken at Track and Field clinics every year since 1992, many years attending or speaking at multiple events. He is the former president of the Washington State Track and Field Coaches Association and former VP of PNTF. Coach Ward is a former Assistant Football coach, Athletic Director, and Head Cross Country Coach, having individuals qualify for State each year, and taking the only two girls teams in CKHS history to the State Meet. Coach Ward competed in Football and Track and Field at Olympia High School, and Track and Field at Central Washington University.
Olga Mangels: Assistant Coach, Throws - Coach Mangels has been coaching at CKHS since 2003. She is an avid reader of articles and books on the throwing events, as well as flexibility and strength. Coach Mangels is a graduate of the Sports Academies (University) in the former Soviet Union, where she competed and earned her degree in Athletics Coaching, specifically track and field.
Robert Evans: Assistant Coach, Sprints, Hurdles, Relays - Coach Evans has been coaching track and field at CKHS since 2007. In addition to his duties at a track and field assistant, he is also an assistant football coach at Klahowya Secondary School. Coach Evans is a graduate of South Kitsap High School, where he competed in Track & Field and football. Coach Evans competed in track at Abilene Christian University and Whitworth University, where he was a sprinter. Coach Evans graduated with a degree in History.
Mark Keel: Assistant Coach, Jumps - Coach Keel is in his second tour of duty as the jumps coach at CKHS. During his first stint coaching the jumpers, CK qualified a jumper to State each of his 7 years, with High Jumper, Dyame Lemming placing 2nd in 2001. Coach Keel was a Triple Jumper and High Jumper at Clover Park High School and continued on at Olympic College where he triple jumped just shy of 50 feet. He also played basketball and football at CP and OC, where he garnered the attention of the University of Arizona. Coach Keel played 10 seasons of professional football in the USFL and NFL. Most of you know Coach Keel from his experience stalking the sidelines as our Head Football Coach.
Bill Braun: Assistant Coach, Throws - Coach Braun started throwing Shot put and Discus in 1978. He went to State Championship for Discus as a freshman and finished 5th. Unfortunately, he broke his wrist his sophomore season and had to have it re-broken after it healed wrong. Coach Braun never threw competitively after that. He stayed involved by assisting in coaching throwers rest of High School career. Coach Braun was a member of West Virginia University (WVU) Rifle Team that won NCAA National Championship in 1982/83. He was a member of the US Navy from 1985 until retiring in January 2009. Coach Braun has continued to stay active in coaching, Assisted/Assistant Coach for throwing for CKJH & CKHS from 2004 - 2007.
