ART

CALLIGRAPHY

This course is a study of art of beautiful   writing. Students will develop the ability to use several styles of Calligraphy in the design and creation of high quality works, while gaining an understanding of the Elements and Principals of art. Emphasis will be on skill development and creative problem solving.

 

DESIGN

So, what makes art, Art?  Design is a good course for both the student who has little or no experience in art and the student who wishes to pursue art in depth.  Through an exploration of  the principles and elements, Design focuses on the development and understanding of visual order in art and the search for solutions.  Activities include two and three dimensional projects, filmstrips, discussions, critiques, and fieldwork in magazines and books.

 

DRAWING

Drawing is an excellent beginning course for experienced and inexperienced students.  Study will range from elementary structure, introduction to perspective, arrangement and use of the art elements, and the use of light and shade to the more expressive aspects of figure drawing.  Students will cover many approaches to drawing, a variety of drawing media, problems and subject matter.

 

JEWELRY MAKING

1 Semester                 Credit: .5

Fees:  $25 

This course consists of studio experiences in design, metal use, soldering, stone setting, centrifugal casting, wire work and other jewelry making techniques.  The focus will be basic metalsmithing through the use and understanding of the Elements and Principals of art as well as the art and history of this ancient craft. Students will produce wearable pieces while developing skills, technique and creative problem solving abilities.

 

 

 

COMMERCIAL DESIGN

Fees:  $15

Students in this class will learn the language of layout while designing and producing pieces suitable for the paper products industry and other printables. Basic drawings, designs, lettering, airbrush, technology, mixed media and other techniques will be taught through the use and understanding of the Elements and Principles of Art.  Students will explore the way commercial artists work and opportunities in this field.  

 

PRINTMAKING

Fees:  $10

This course is designed to introduce the student to the four areas of printmaking:  silkscreen, etching, lithography, and woodcut/linoleum printing.  Students will explore the basic processes and create projects such as school posters, cards, T-shirts and fine art pieces.

 

 

 

POTTERY

1 Semester                 Credit: .5

Fees:  $15

Pottery is a beginning class emphasizing the use of basic tools and methods used in all ceramic processes.  Students will develop skills in various hand building techniques. A special emphasis on surface decorating and glazing techniques will be explored.  Activities will include: 5-10 demonstrations, Ceramic Monthly reviews, pottery drawing notebooks, and vocabulary.

 

ADVANCED POTTERY

1 Semester                 Credit: .5

Fees:  $15

This course consists of studio experience in wheel thrown pottery forms.  In addition, special projects will include combined wheel thrown and hand built pieces, understanding glaze functions, raku, sculptural and functional forms.  Discussions surrounding the aesthetics of clay as an art form are included in the curriculum.

 

 

PAINTING

Fees:  $10 Fee

Painting students will develop an understanding of traditional and contemporary painting mediums, techniques, and art history.  Focus will be on using the Elements and Principles of art in order to communicate and express ideas through finished works of art.  Students will learn basic drawing skills, composition, color theory, and design and create high quality work in oil, acrylics, watercolor, pastels, ink and mixed media.

 


AIRBRUSH

1 Semester                 Credit: .5  

Fee $10

The art of airbrush is full of interesting possibilities, artistic methods and techniques.  Graphic illustration will be the emphasis, which will provide training in several areas:  drawing, design, lettering and color.  Students must provide their own frisket, illustration board, airbrush paint, and Xacto knife.  

 

STAINED GLASS  

1 Semester                 Credit: .5  

Fee $15

Stained glass class will include techniques of constructing stained glass panels, sun-catchers, and windows.  Students will study the makeup of glass, design and color in glass working and a bit of history in glass work.  You will also mix and melt your own glass pieces from scratch.  Tools, chemicals, copper tapes, and clear glass will be provided.  Color glass be purchased by the student.  COURSE FEE: $15.00

 

AP STUDIO ART

1 Year             Credit:  1

Fees:  $10 for materials.  $82.00 for AP test.

This is a college-level course in the visual arts.  Students will be expected to produce a minimum of 40 works of art in a variety of media, techniques and subject matter.  Emphasis is placed on drawing from direct observation, the application of color and design principles (2-D & 3-D).  Students will develop a body of work of their own choosing, while recognizing the history of art and its role in the development of visual ideas.  Critique in written and oral form will be an important focus of this course.  Instructor permission/portfolio review necessary.

 

CREATIVE FIBER ART  

1 Semester                 Credit: .5  

Fee $15

This course offers an introduction to a variety of fiber techniques, including but not limited to on and off loom weaving, silk painting, batik, tie-dye, basketry, printing and stamping, stenciling and macramé.  Students will design and create wearables, wall hangings, jewelry and other function and decorative pieces - anything made from fabric and other natural materials.  Focus will be the use and understandings of the Elements and Principles of art to produce high quality, creative work.
